Freedom of the Press Foundation Yearly Impact Reports

Since 2019, I have worked with the Freedom of the Press Foundation to produce variety of projects, including Impact Reports, Strategic Plans, editorial illustrations, and promotional artwork. The primary focus of my work with FPF has been to design their yearly Impact Reports, highlighting the organization's achievements from the past year. These documents are available online in PDF format through FPF's Reports page and communicate crucial projects, landmark moments, and transparency data for donors, journalists, and involved citizens.
Impact Report 2025
Following the previous year's return to a more minimal design, this year's Impact Report stepped toward a more minimal, abstract approach. We maintained trends from the previous year such as duotone image processing and grain. We explored new ways of integrating nods to the FPF logo and website design into this Report by incorporating grids, checkering, and traveling lines which connected spreads and helped to ground images with highlighted quotes and photo captions.
Impact Report 2024
Following the previous year's book, the 2024 Impact Report was revised significantly into a more concise document in a standardized page format that would be more compatible with print. This came with the added challenge of compressing a large amount of information into less space. Additionally, a large number of the year's most striking photos were below print resolution. To address these challenges, I revised the book's visual design scheme to make heavy use of photo grain and limited palette duotone processing that would help mask any resolution limitations while allowing pages to breath more. To keep some reference to last year's design, torn paper edges were used to add an organic touch to text-heavy pages.
This Report made use of a handful of character illustrations that were isolated from a promotional poster I had created for FPF the previous year. These illustrations represent a few of the different roles that go into creating the robust field of journalism that FPF aims to protect and maintain.
Impact Report 2023
The longest Report to date, the 2023 booklet included an array of narrative highlights, infographics, and program documentation. Redacted documents served as the initial touchpoint for designing this year's book. I extended this theme to reference government documents broadly, utilizing photocopy artifacts and security envelope textures as a familiar reference to public sector paper trails. Icons from FPF's U.S. Press Freedom Tracker website and selective highlighting were used to add visual flair.
